2 Day Screen printing Course

This two day course at my studio in Coromandel covers all of the steps required to produce screen printed art work. The emphasis is printing on to paper but the screens we will be making are also suitable for printing on to fabric.. The only requirement for course participants is to bring along ideas or sketches of what you would like to print. The maximum image size suitable for the screens is about 300mm x 300mm but of course you can use smaller images and even put two images on one screen. This works well if you want to screen print cards.

Duration: 2 days 10am to 5pm
Cost:  $230
Included: All materials, lunch and morning tea on both days

Course Outline

DAY ONE starts with a demonstration of multicolour printing on handmade Italian Fabriano paper and a discussion of the steps required to achieve the print. Then it is down to work on your pencil sketch. Once you have a sketch that you are happy with we set about producing an Indian Ink positive drawn on to drafting film. This step is the most important for producing a precise final image so we will be using a variety of pens and brushes in the process to achieve that. I will then demonstrate screen making through the stages of stretching fine mesh onto a wooden frame, coating with photo emulsion, drying and exposure.

Throughout the day there will be lots of hands- on opportunities to practice printing techniques using some of my stock screens. By the end of day one it is anticipated that everyone will have their transparent positives completed.

DAY TWO will start with coating screens with emulsion then drying.  Exposure of the screen to a bright light source is a pretty magical process which results in your design embedded permanently on a mesh screen as a negative. The rest of the day will be taken up by printing on to Fabriano paper or fabric.

The weekend is designed to cater for all levels of experience, including beginners. The emphasis is on having a lot of fun and producing something worthwhile at the end.

COST

The course fee of $230 covers all materials, a catered lunch and morning tea on both days.
